First REMODEL Conclave Brings Consortium Together in Bristol

The REMODEL team met in Bristol for its first in-person conclave, bringing together 19 participants from across partner institutions to align direction and establish the programme’s foundations.

The REMODEL team came together in Bristol for its first in-person conclave, bringing all partner institutions into the same room for the first time. With 19 attendees from across the consortium, the day focused on establishing a shared understanding of the programme and aligning how the work will move forward.

The morning sessions were centred around contributions from each institution. Partners presented both their relevant prior work and their planned technical contributions to REMODEL, providing context on where each team is starting from and how their expertise fits within the wider programme. This was an important step in ensuring clarity across the consortium, helping to identify overlaps, dependencies, and areas where closer collaboration will be needed.

Following this, cross-institution discussions explored how the programme will operate as a whole. Conversations focused on key challenges around scalability, performance, and integration, as well as how different components of the workflow will connect in practice. These sessions helped define early priorities and establish a clearer picture of how the work packages will interact.

The afternoon sessions focused on practical context for the work ahead. A session on high-performance computing covered current and emerging architectures, with discussion around memory constraints and data movement at scale. This was followed by a presentation on the NEKTAR++ GPU redesign, sharing lessons learned from adapting large scientific software to modern hardware and highlighting implications for future development.

To conclude, the team agreed how the programme will be coordinated in practice. Regular work package meetings will form the core of ongoing activity, supported by shared platforms for communication, documentation, and collaboration across the consortium.

The Bristol conclave marked the starting point for coordinated activity across REMODEL. With roles clarified and a shared direction established, work is now underway across all areas of the programme.
